B. Kay's Story
After graduating from Permian, I obtained my BS and MBA degrees. During the summer of 1970, Newton Shrader and I got married. We have known each other since the 5th grade in Midland and married while we were students at Texas Tech.
My husband and best friend went home to Jesus on June 8, 2019 after a long battle with a very rare cancer in the sarcoma family. We attributed his longer than normal life expectancy to the numerous prayers and the MD Anderson Cancer Center. I still miss Newton as I do my parents, but I know that he will be waiting to greet me at those pearly gates when our Lord calls me home.
I have been employed utilizing both of my degrees as my husband did also. I was an Extension Service Home Economist for 5 years with my BS in Home Economics Education Degree. I have used my MBA degree in the accounting profession since 1985. I have been a CPA since 1988. I started with one of the major accounting firms of Coopers and Lybrand, now Price Waterhouse Coopers. I have been in tax planning and preparation area my whole accounting career. I started my own firm Kay Shrader, CPA, PC on August 1, 2008 in Midland which has been a rewarding experience and I like being in charge. My husband, Newton, worked both as an engineer using his bachelor's degree and in finance with his MBA degree. We have lived in Midland since 1986. We have been members of the First Baptist Church in Midland since moving to Midland. My Odessa resident parents, Sherrill & Marie Easley have both passed away. My Dad loved to work and worked until he was 86 years of age daily as President and part owner of the oil field supply company, Desert Energy Equipment. My older sister, Lana Westerfeldt, is a retired elementary school teacher in Odessa. My younger sister, Patty Bee, is an oil and gas accountant in Houston. We were blessed to have loving Christian parents.
My husband and I loved to travel. Our favorite travel spot was the big island of Hawaii and the small island of Kauai. We loved the beautiful scenery and the fact that everyone speaks English. We have been to Europe several times and to Australia twice and New Zealand. I did tour Israel with a girlfriend in November 2006, which met one of my lifetime goals. I had some of my recent travel plans cancelled due to Covid, and one due to Russian’s Putin as I had planned a June, 2022 cruise to St Petersburg with my 2 sisters. I am traveling more again. I went to Mackinac Island Michigan on a Road Scholar tour with my former college roommate. We decided that we could still share a room even with years of newly acquired habits. We had much fun and walked a great deal on the island. I was on Mackinac Island with our tour group when many of my fellow high school graduates were in Horseshoe Bay in August, 2022. I lack seeing the states of Kentucky, Iowa, and North Dakota to reach my goal of seeing all 50 states. In September, 2022, a couple that I have known since 1978 invited ...Expand for more
me to join them in Branson, Missouri and we had a great time seeing many shows. I gave them a 47th anniversary gift and we celebrated on the Branson Belle Boat with a dinner and shows. They are a precious Christian couple and wonderful friends.
Fortunately I am a Christian so I do have the Holy Spirit to help me and guide me. Jesus doesn’t promise us an easy life, but He does promise to be with us and He is. I also am fortunate to have true Christian friends who make sure that I feel included in activities. After my husband passed in June, I was thinking about the first holiday July 4th without him. About 30 minutes later a Christian couple was texting me and inviting me to their house for a cookout on July 4th. I told them that the Holy Spirit must have motivated them to ask me as I was just thinking about what I could do on this Holiday without my long time spouse. The wife teared up when I told her. She responded that they didn’t take their true friends for granted. My best friend and her husband said that they were coming to pick me up for my birthday to take me to Sedona Arizona for a vacation in 2019 on my next birthday without my spouse. One of my brother and sister friends also invited me to go with them on a cruise to St Thomas and St Martin which is normally an annual thing for them in December as they miss their parents at Christmas. They agreed to delay their normal timing on their annual cruise to after the April 15th, tax deadline in 2020, and told me that my husband and I always took a vacation after April 15th each year. They knew I would miss that sweet husband of mine. They even picked up my costs as I was told that this was their gift to me, but that I could pay for my portion of the next cruise. Unfortunately this cruise was cancelled due to Covid restrictions. I have been so blessed with true friends. Another widow friend at church took me under her wing as she has been a widow for about 20 years. I am now trying to help other widows. My sisters and I have also scheduled a cruise to see the changing of colors of trees going from Quebec to Martha’s Vineyard and back to Baltimore in 2023, as the first one we booked for 2020 was cancelled.
I am enjoying my life and thankful for the time and blessings that I have been given by my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If you don’t know Jesus personally, please ask Him to forgive you of your sins in a simple prayer such as: “ Dear God, I know that I am a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died for my sin and that you raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen”. If you pray this prayer His Holy Spirit will also come into you. God will also give you His peace.
May God bless each of you as we continue the final season of our lives!
